Paris, Montmartre
When traveling outside the United States,
I always find myself bracing as I open the door to my hotel room or short-term rental apartment. Even after looking at photos and reading reviews, I never really know what I am walking into. But as luck would have it,
I discovered Hôtel Littéraire Marcel Aymé
- for me, a real game changer.
The lobby was lovely - very bright and inviting. But I had been fooled before by beautiful reception areas, only to step into a hotel room that was subpar. So I remained skeptical. However, upon opening the door to my room, I almost screamed with delight! I couldn’t believe how nice the room was.
The hotel is named after Marcel Aymé, a French writer and is part of a collection of hotels inspired by famous French literary figures.
Room Space - My “double room” fit one large full size bed. Comfortable mattress with very nice bedding. Although the room wasn’t large, one could move around in comfort. There was also enough room for a chair that sat at the window, which afforded wonderful views of Parisian storefronts on the small curving street below.
Bathroom - Very impressive. White subway tiles made the space very modern and aesthetically pleasing. There was a separate “water closet” or stand alone toilet area. Very clean sink and shower. Again, although small, the shower-sink area provided enough room to comfortably get essential things done.
Closet Space - Limited. OK for one person.
If rooming with others, inquire before booking about closet/ storage space among the various room types.
Extras- Complementary breakfast and WiFi, in-room safe and espresso machine, TV, NUXE body products and Dammann Teas (both very French).
Accessibility - Elevator - thank God, yes!
Hôtel Marcel Aymé is a 5 minute walk to metro Blanche. A 7 minute walk to metro Abbesses. A 15 minute walk to metro Anvers. I must warn you, the hotel sits at the top of an incline. For the less mobile, this may be very challenging. But you could take a taxI.
Safety/ Noise - I felt extremely safe in my room. The Hôtel Marcel Aymé has a reception attendant (who speaks perfect English) on duty 24 hours. And the door to the hotel opens onto the reception desk - an added safety aspect. Did not hear other hotel guests. With the windows closed, I also didn’t really hear the patrons at the bar across the street. But I do sleep with ear plugs. Bar not the rowdy type, however if concerned, request a room on a high floor or one not facing the bar.
Location - Right in the heart of Montmartre, one of my favorite neighborhoods. The area was once home to many artist who would later become world famous - Picasso, Renoir and Modigliani among others.
Things To Do - Lots!! Sacré Coeur, Place du Tertre (artist square), the Moulin Rouge and much more. Hôtel Marcel Aymé is steps away from a variety of restaurants, cafés, indy fashion boutiques, art galleries, even a few grocery stores and wine shops. The neighborhood of Montmartre is really a superb location from which to experience Paris.
Rates - Off season: €75 to €135. High season: €175 +.
